COMM260- Gender Communication Media Research Project.

Objective:

To explore the effects of media/culture on gender, gender identity, and gender communication in the past and how it has evolved today. The ultimate goal is to show how media/culture is impacting our views on gender and ultimately the expectations we have for one another when interacting/communicating.

Possible topics to research:

Gender Identity Gender and Romantic relationships

Gender in the Workplace Gendered Education

Gender and Friendship Gender and Power abuses

Which ever topic you choose, remember to include media’s influence, either Print, Television, Radio, film, social media, etc.

Requirements:

1. Annotated Bibliography: 6 sources/articles should be selected/used (4 popular and 2 academic). You will gather, assess, and share these in an annotated bibliography. You may not use the textbook as one of your sources, however, I encourage you to consult it and apply concepts to your conclusions. If you have more than 6 research article sources, include annotations for them all. Also include and introductory paragraph stating your research questions/hypothesis, and a conclusion statement, this should summarize your findings and conclusions based on your research.

An Annotated bibliography example of our text:

Ivy, Diana K. “Chapter 4 Catching a Clue.” Gender Speak, 6th ed., Kendall Hunt, 2017, pp. 95–101.

This chapter, presented in a gender communication text, highlights the importance of nonverbal communication. The presence of nonverbal communication is constant in human communication and throughout this chapter there is a variety of articles supporting the differing approaches of masculine and feminine communicators when it comes to nonverbal use and ability (encoding and decoding).

I found this useful for the project as the body posturing in many of the social media posts I reviewed showed very specific gestures, postures, facial expressions, and positions of power for males and females. The images are clearly communicating expectations for interactions and behavior and this chapter supports my view. The strongest piece of support I noted was the author’s inclusion of a study that revealed the female body was used for determination of sexuality more often than males.

NEW SOURCE – And do this for the other research article sources you use for your project, one after another.
