Chapter 1 Review Questions (Taken from the end of the chapter):
How did the events of the 1960s change American policing? Is it likely that there was an interactive effect from the events? Which likely exerted the most profound influence?
What can/should an academic discipline contribute to field practice? Why in the United States is academe the driving force for “core” research in both the physical and social sciences?
It was noted that in controlling the civil rights and Vietnam protestors in the 1960s, American police did not kill a single protestor. At what point in a civil protest are the police in a free society justified in using physical force? If force is used, what limits should be placed?
What guidelines should be placed on the use of differential response (taking a report over the phone or Internet)? How should a caller be handled who insists on having a patrol unit respond even when the trivial nature of the complaint does not justify it?
To what phenomenon does the metaphor “broken windows” refer? To what enforcement approach does the metaphor apply? What was dramatic about the change in enforcement approach that is associated with broken windows enforcement?
Chapter 3 Review Questions (taken from the end of the chapter)

It is suggested that small, tightly integrated, autonomous, self-identified neighborhoods interwoven with their police departments is mythology. What characteristics of a typical suburban city and its residents argue against the mythological image?
What harm occurs by tagging the term “policing” onto a descriiptive phrase of a strategic approach, that is, community policing, problem-oriented policing, intelligence-led policing, evidence-based policing, and the like?
Describe which components of community policing were tested in each of the four empirical assessments that attempted to link the implementation of the respective component to crime reduction.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics periodically surveys major police departments to ascertain a range of information, from policies to staffing. Summarize recent results in terms of both the number of community policing specialists reported by surveyed agencies as well as the proportion of agencies reporting the existence of a designated community policing organizational unit.
You should answer each review question fully. It should contain proper grammar, be free of spelling errors, and reflect critical thinking.
