Module 5 Discussion questions. Respond to each of these questions by relating the ideas in these resources to your experiences as a user of digital technologies, a student, and/or an educator. The goal here is to build a repertoire of diverse experiences and perspectives as we learn together the effects of technologies in our lives. Core resources 1. Pangrazio, L. and Selwyn N. (2019). Personal data literacies: A critical literacies approach to enhancing understandings of personal digital data. New Media & Society. 21(2):419-437. doi:10.1177/1461444818799523 2. Youth toolkit on the humaneTech website https://www.humanetech.com/youth Please aim for about 280 words for all three questions. 1. After reading Pangrazio and Selwyn article, paraphrase your understanding of ‘personal data literacies’. What does it mean to be literate in relation to your (and others) personal data? Draw on the article to support your view. 2. Pangrazio and Selwyn provide examples of different kind of data generated in online platforms: data that is provided ‘voluntarily’; data that systems/devices extract from you, and data that is processed by systems, in other words, turned into another digital product for consumption. What is an example of one of these kinds of data in relation to your own participation online? For example, when/where you provide data ‘voluntarily’, when/where your data is extracted from you involuntarily, or when/where your data is processed and turned into another commodity. If you are not sure, you can speculate. 3. ChatGPT, GPT 4, Bing and other AIs have made quite a splash in the university. Have you used these AIs? For what purposes? What is your experience at SFU in relation to developing your literacy about Generative AI? For example, have you been taught to use AIs with integrity? What policies do you encounter in your courses? What are your experiences of GenAIs problems and potential?
