ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS The theme/topic of the assignment is FACULTY GOVERNANCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION (based on this theme, it is necessary to identify issue, challenge in higher education) Guideline: Definition and Importance Faculty governance refers to the role faculty members play in the decision-making processes of higher education institutions. This typically involves faculty participation in areas such as curriculum development, academic standards, and institutional policies. It also means shared governance. Importance: Academic Freedom: Ensures that faculty have a voice in matters that affect their teaching, research, and professional responsibilities. Institutional Quality: Faculty involvement is believed to enhance the quality of education and research by leveraging their expertise. Shared Governance: Represents a fundamental principle in higher education, balancing power among faculty, administration, and governing boards. Please write me two parts about this topic: Part 1: Historical background. Identify what you consider to be key historical moments, events, and actors (persons or organizations) whereby the issue has emerged, come into prominence, and (if appropriate) receded from prominence. Justify your choices. (6-7 pages). Suggestions for what could be included in this part (please do not limit yourself to these suggestions, feel free to add other items, events, etc.): Part 1: Historical Background Key Historical Moments and Actors Early History: o Medieval Universities: The roots of faculty governance can be traced back to medieval European universities where faculty had significant control over academic matters. 19th and Early 20th Century: o German University Model: Influenced American higher education, emphasizing research and academic freedom, and promoting faculty governance. o Founding of the AAUP (1915): The American Association of University Professors was established to protect academic freedom and promote shared governance. Post-WWII Expansion: o Growth of Higher Education: Rapid expansion led to increased faculty participation in governance to manage the complexities of larger institutions. 1960s and 1970s: o Student and Faculty Activism: Significant movements advocating for greater faculty and student roles in governance, especially during the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements. Modern Developments: o Corporate Models of Governance: Recent trends towards corporate-style management in universities, with debates on the erosion of faculty governance. o Technology and Online Education: Emerging challenges and opportunities for faculty governance in the context of digital transformation. Part 2: Organizational analysis. Using one or at most two perspectives from organization theory, identify why colleges and universities have or have not adequately responded to the issue, why some have while others have not (if relevant), and why the issue periodically re-emerges (if relevant). (6-7 pages). Suggestions for what could be included in this part (please do not limit yourself to these suggestions, feel free to add other items, events, etc.): Part 2: Organizational Analysis Organizational Theories and Perspectives Bureaucratic vs. Collegial Models: Bureaucratic Perspective: Views the university as a hierarchical organization with clear lines of authority and standardized procedures. Faculty governance might be seen as inefficient in this model. Collegial Perspective: Emphasizes a community of scholars working together, where shared governance is crucial for institutional success. Institutional Theory: Legitimacy: Faculty governance contributes to the legitimacy of higher education institutions by promoting transparency and inclusiveness. Isomorphism: Examines how institutions adopt similar governance structures in response to external pressures and expectations. Decision-Making -> could be considered as an alternative. PS. Please, based on the provided literature, select the best-fitted theory, perspective, or model to better explain the issues in faculty governance. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS It is important to apply foundational concepts and literature in the higher education field. To demonstrate that you can engage thoughtfully with important issues or challenges, analyze questions in depth, and express your ideas clearly with appropriate grounding in relevant literature. Required literature provided. Please do not limit yourself to the provided literature. You can search for other articles published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Please note that these two parts (Part 1 & Part 2) will be the parts of my general assignment. So, it means that, before Part 1, there will be one more part, which is the introduction – this part will be written by myself later. Feel free to add subtitles for each part so it will be better to read and understand the content.
