This term paper aims to analyze how Virginia Woolf perceived gender norms and how those perceptions evolved by re-evaluating A Room of One’s Own from the perspective of Judith Butler, specifically by investigating one of her later works, Undoing Gender. Woolf’s work remains significant, as the issues it addresses are, at least in part, still issues women face today. Parallel analysis of these two texts will be done to understand how Woolf constructs femininity and whether it is possible to successfully re-analyze by utilizing Butler’s theoretical approach to gender. By doing so, I believe we can understand the essential values of feminism that remain and should remain unchanged.
THIS WAS MY FIRST DRAFT. HOWEVER, INSTRUCTOR WANTED ME TO ADD ONE MORE WRITER TO THE PAPER. THE GREAT LAWSUIT BY MARGARET FULLER SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE CONVERSATION. HOW IT CONTRASTS WITH WOOLF SHOULD BE EXPLORED, AND HANDLING OF GENDER NORMS IN THE BOOK SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED VIA LENS OF JUDITH BUTLER.
